The history of the bridal bouquet

Have you ever wondered why the bridal bouquet is used today?  The bouquet actually dates back to ancient times.  Back then the bouquet didn’t consist of flowers though.  The bride would carry around bunches of garlic, herbs, and spices believed to ward off evil spirits.  In ancient Greece and Rome both the bride and groom wore garland around their necks symbolizing new life, hope, and fertility.  The garland also consisted of herbs and spices.  When Queen Victoria and Prince Albert got married in 1840 the herbs and spices were replaced with fresh flowers, mostly marigolds.  In Victorian times flowers became the secret messengers of lovers; each flower having it’s own meaning. The flowers that were chosen for the bouquet were chosen because of their meaning.  However in modern times flowers are chosen by the bride because of their shape and color.  They choose flowers that fit their style and personality.
